Work Centers and Multiple Resources — A Guide from Scratch
An operation is not done by the machine alone: it needs a competent operator, a mould mounted on the machine, and sometimes a fixture, a tool or a reserved area. This window groups the machines that can do the same job into work centers, defines secondary resources such as operators and moulds, tracks each mould's life by its number of shots, keeps a competence matrix of how competent each operator is on which machine and job, and writes onto routing steps "this step also needs these, together with the machine". With this information the Production Schedule (APS) looks for a time when not only the machine but every required resource is free at once; production confirmation applies the same rules.
1. What this window is for
The window is in the Production group of the dock (Production → Stuck Work → APS → Work Centers). It has five tabs: Work centers, Resource pool, Mould life, Competence matrix and Routing resources. The summary strip at the top gives the situation at a glance; clicking a box opens the matching tab.
- Machines / machines without a work center — how many machines there are and how many are not linked to any work center.
- Machine operator, Moulds, Fixtures, tools and areas — the number of defined resources.
- Moulds running out of life / Worn-out moulds / Resources in maintenance — the yellow and red numbers are the mould-maintenance agenda (section 5).
- Competence gaps — how many routing steps lack the required number of competent operators (section 6).
- Jobs assigned today — the number of operations assigned to operators today in the official schedule.
2. The concepts you need
Work center
A work center is a group of machines that can do the same job (for example three injection presses). If a routing step is written to a work center instead of a single machine, the schedule places the step on the center's machine that becomes free first. A machine can belong to more than one center. A center without machines is scheduled with as many virtual machines as its parallel count (rows CENTER/1, CENTER/2 … in the Gantt chart) — handy for a line whose machines you have not defined one by one yet.
Secondary resource types
| Type | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Machine operator | One person (quantity is always 1). Has their own shift and leave; competences are kept in the matrix. Can be linked to a production personnel record or an HR employee card. |
| Mould | The mould mounted on the machine. Its life is tracked in shots; it can be specific to one product and certain machines. Can be linked to a production mould card. |
| Fixture / Tool | A clamping fixture or a special tool. Quantity is the pool size: a fixture with quantity 3 can be used on three machines at the same time. You can give it a life limit too. |
| Work area | A reserved place: a drying room, a test stand, an assembly bench. Quantity is how many jobs fit at the same time. |
Shot counter and life limit
A mould's life is measured in shots: every close-and-open of the mould is one shot. A multi-cavity mould produces several parts per shot, so the shots of a confirmation are calculated as ⌈quantity ÷ cavities⌉ (the cavity count comes from the operation's cavities field; if it is 0, shots = quantity). Example: 1,000 parts with a 4-cavity mould → 250 shots; 1,001 parts → 251 shots. Remaining life = life limit − shot counter; a limit of 0 means unlimited life. When the remaining life falls below the warning percentage (10% by default) the mould turns yellow — the "T-10% warning".
The old mould card stays separate. The part counter and the KALIP_BAKIM threshold of the mould card in the Production window are unchanged. A mould resource here can be linked to that card, but its life counter is kept here separately, in shots.
Competence levels
| Level | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 1 | In training — learning the job, not left alone. |
| 2 | Works under supervision — needs an experienced person nearby. |
| 3 | Works independently — does the job alone. This is the default minimum level on requirement lines. |
| 4 | Trainer — can also train others. |
Every competence record has a target: a machine, a work center or an operation (operation name/code). Once the optional valid-until date has passed, the record no longer counts — an operator whose certificate has expired is not assigned in the schedule.
3. The Work centers tab
The list of centers is on the left (Code, Name, Type, Machine, Efficiency, 7-day capacity, Status) and the form of the selected center on the right. New work center opens an empty form. The fields:
- Type — Machine group, Production line or Production cell (for information; the schedule treats all three the same).
- Number of parallel machines — used only for a center without members: the schedule opens this many virtual machines.
- Shifts — chosen from the shift definitions in HR. If none is chosen, the center works on the default calendar.
- Efficiency (%) — the run time is divided by this rate: at 80% efficiency a 60-minute job takes 75 minutes. Setup time is not affected.
- Hourly cost, Active (used in the schedule), Note. An inactive center does not enter the schedule.
Member machines
Drag a machine from the "Machines not linked to a work center" list on the left onto the member list on the right, or pick a Machine to add and press Add. Each member has two settings: Speed factor (a time factor — 1 = same speed, 1.25 = 25% slower) and Preference (with equal finish times the lower preference is chosen first). Remove takes the member off the list. Member changes are written with Save. Below, the center's capacity for the next 7 days appears day by day, in hours (efficiency included).
Suggestions
If there are no centers yet, or machines without a center remain, the Suggestions panel groups machines by machine type and code prefix ("Same machine type: PRESS.", "Same machine code prefix: CNC."). Nothing is written automatically; pressing Create from this suggestion creates the center and its members, which you can then edit.
Deleting a center does not delete the machines; the center link on routing steps is removed and those steps return to their own machines. Machines not linked to any center still count as resources on their own in the schedule, as before.
4. The Resource pool tab
Filter by type with the buttons at the top (All, Operators, Moulds, Fixtures, Tools, Areas) or search by code, name or linked record. Each card shows the code, name, status, the life bar for moulds, the location and the maintenance due date. For a new resource, first choose the Type of the new resource. The form fields:
- Code (converted to capitals, unique), Name, Quantity — the number of units that can be used at the same time (pool). Always 1 for an operator.
- Linked record type / number — links an operator to Production personnel or an HR employee, and a mould to a Production mould card. On the phone, "my jobs for today" are found through this link.
- Shifts (operator) — if none is selected, the default shift on the HR employee card is used, or the default calendar if there is none. On approved HR leave days the operator counts as not working.
- Life limit (shots) and Warning percentage — 0 means unlimited. The shot counter cannot be typed in the form; it changes only through production confirmation and the maintenance/refurbishment flow.
- Location type / Location (warehouse or machine), Maintenance due date, Calibration date — if the date runs out before the planned use, the schedule warns.
- Compatible machines (empty = all) and Mould's product (empty = all products) — the schedule uses the mould only on a compatible machine and for its own product.
Log — the event log
A resource's Log tab shows the last 200 events: Shots counted, Used, Put into maintenance, Maintenance completed, Refurbished, Life used up, Status changed, Life warning. The event log is never deleted; you can always see later which confirmation of which order added how many shots. A resource used in routing requirements or in the schedule cannot be deleted.
5. The Mould life tab
Moulds are sorted by remaining life percentage, lowest first. The life bar is green (healthy), yellow (remaining life below the warning percentage) or red (life used up); next to it you read "1,200 shots left (8%)" and "Counter 13,800 / limit 15,000". A mould without a limit shows "Unlimited life · counter … shots". The buttons on the row:
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Put into maintenance | The status becomes "Under maintenance"; the mould cannot be used in the schedule or in confirmations until maintenance is done. The counter does not change. |
| Maintenance done | The mould is released for use again; the counter does not change (maintenance does not extend life). |
| Refurbish mould | The mould counts as refurbished (overhauled): the counter is reset, an optional new life limit can be entered (empty = unchanged) and the mould is released for use. |
Every action is confirmed in the confirmation strip, takes an optional note and is written to the Log. No maintenance action is possible on an inactive mould.
What happens when the life is used up
- At confirmation: when the counter reaches the limit the status automatically becomes "Life used up". The next confirmation with a worn-out or in-maintenance mould hits the
KALIP_OMURblock — this block has no escape; the way forward is maintenance or refurbishment. - On a new order: if no suitable (active, with life left) mould exists for a product whose recipe requires a mould, a new production order cannot be opened:
KALIP_OMUR_DOLDU. - In the schedule: a worn-out or in-maintenance mould is not a candidate. If the shots accumulating in schedule order would exceed the remaining life, a warning appears: "The remaining life of mould … (… shots) is less than the … shots needed for order …. Plan maintenance or refurbishment."
6. The Competence matrix tab
Rows are operators, columns are targets (machines, work centers, operations — the colour in the column header shows the target type; you can narrow it with the Target type filter). The cell colour shows the level: 1 orange, 2 yellow, 3 green, 4 blue; a cell whose validity has expired has red stripes ("This competence has expired. The schedule and confirmation do not count it."). Clicking a cell opens the Competence level (1-4), Valid until (empty = no expiry) and Remove competence.
The missing competence list
Below the matrix, every routing step that requires operator competence is checked for the required number of competent operators (Product, Operation, Required competence, Competent operators, Required). Example line: "URUN-12 op 20: 1 operators are competent at level 3 for PRES-3, 2 required." If the list is empty, it says "There are enough competent operators to meet all routing requirements." This list will later feed the training plan; the Send to training plan button is disabled for now ("coming soon").
7. The Routing resources tab
Type a stock code or description into Product code and press Get routing. The product's active recipes (Recipe no, Version) and each one's operations (step, duration, cavities, machine) appear. Two things are done on each step:
- Work center — link the step to a work center, or leave "No work center (own machine)". A step linked to a center is placed on a suitable machine of that center in the schedule.
- Requirement lines — with Add requirement, write each resource the step needs at the same time as the machine as one line.
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Secondary resource type / Code | Operator, mould, fixture, tool or area. If the code is empty, "Any suitable one": every active, compatible unit of that type is a candidate; if filled, only that unit. |
| Competence type / target / Minimum level | Operator lines only. No competence required, Machine, Work center or Operation competence. If the target is empty, "The machine the step is placed on" / "The step's work center" is used. Minimum level defaults to 3. |
| Quantity | How many units are needed at the same time (for example two operators). |
| Scope | Setup only (for example a mould-change technician), Run only (for example the operator at the machine) or Setup and run (for example the mould itself). The resource is reserved only for this interval. |
A step without requirements says "No secondary resource requirement. The step waits only for the machine." — exactly the old behaviour.
8. Together with the Production Schedule (APS)
The schedule places an operation in the first interval in which the machine and every requirement line are available at the same time. The part that needs an operator progresses in the intersection of the machine shift and the operator shift. A mould with quantity 1 is used on one machine at a time, so two orders queue up; a fixture with quantity 3 serves three jobs at once. If a requirement can never be met, the order becomes "could not be planned" and the warning says why (no suitable operator / no usable mould / no fixture, tool or area / no machine in the center).
Resource lanes and the bottleneck resource
- On the Schedule tab, ticking Show resource lanes draws a lane for each operator and mould under the machine rows; an interval in which a resource is used beyond its capacity appears in red ("Resource conflict: … – …").
- A bar's tooltip shows "Work center: …" and the assigned secondary resources ("Operator: …", "Mould: …"); the production order card also shows the operator and mould on the op line.
- Operator utilisation, Mould utilisation and Resource conflict were added to the scenario indicators. The bottleneck no longer has to be a machine: if the busiest resource is an operator or a mould, it says "Bottleneck resource: …" and resource rows also enter the heat map of the Bottleneck tab.
- The delivery promise (CTP) also takes the recipe's requirement lines into account: if the mould is busy, the promised date moves accordingly.
The gap in front of a pinned bar
A manually pinned or frozen bar is now held by its run start: the moment the run starts never moves. If a job wants to enter the gap in front of it, the pinned job's setup is recalculated for the product that goes in front and the setup start is pulled back. The job enters only if it finishes before this new setup start and the setup start does not break the pinned job's own lower bound (calculation time, previous operation) — that is, only a job that really fits. If it does not fit, the gap is not used and (if it would have fitted with the old reserved setup but not with the new one) the warning "the gap in front … could not be used … times" appears.
Details: Production Schedule (APS) › Manual pinning.
9. At production confirmation: gate 13 and the mould counter
Gate 13 — competence
Gate 13 — YETKINLIK_YOK: if the routing of the confirmed operation has a requirement line that asks for operator competence, at least one of the personnel on the confirmation (or, if there are none, the operator linked to the user writing the confirmation) must be competent at a sufficient level with a valid record. Otherwise this gate appears in the Check list. The escape (yetkinlikOnay) belongs to the system administrator only; if it is used, a "competence" approval trace is written on the confirmation. If there is no requirement, the gate does not run (old confirmations pass as before). When there is a requirement, a confirmation with no personnel, or with personnel not linked to a work-center operator, is also blocked: the system cannot approve competence without knowing who did the work.
Mould counter: the mould used on a confirmation is found in this order: the work-center mould chosen in the body › the mould linked to the mould number › the assignment in the official schedule › a mould with a single code on the routing. When the confirmation is written, ⌈quantity ÷ cavities⌉ shots are added to the counter and "Shots counted" is written to the Log; if the remaining life falls below the warning threshold the confirmation reply carries a warning, and if it reaches the limit the mould becomes "Life used up". A confirmation with a worn-out or in-maintenance mould stops with KALIP_OMUR (no escape). Operator use is also written to the Log as "Used".
All confirmation gates: Production › the confirmation gates table.
10. With Stuck Work Tracking
When automatic detection finds a stuck operation, it looks at that operation's requirement lines: if no required (competent) active operator exists, No personnel is suggested as the reason; if none of the required mould/fixture/tool/area units is active (life used up, in maintenance, undefined), No mould/fixture is suggested. If there are no requirements, or they are met, it stays "No reason entered" as before. Details: Stuck Work Tracking.
11. On the phone (Garden + Steps)
On a screen smaller than 7 inches the window opens in four steps: Summary · Mould maintenance · Resource pool · Competence.
- Summary — the summary boxes, My jobs for today (operations assigned today in the official schedule to the operator linked to you: Order, Time, Machine) and the mould life cards. If your user is not linked to an operator resource it says "No operator record is linked to you…"; if there is no official schedule, assignments appear after approval.
- Mould maintenance — a five-step approval flow: 1 Mould (pick from the card list with its life colour) → 2 Maintenance action (Put into maintenance / Maintenance done / Refurbish mould; only those allowed for the mould's status) → 3 Note (optional; a new life limit when refurbishing) → 4 Approval (summary) → 5 Result. Buttons: Continue, Back, the action name, Retry, New maintenance action.
- Resource pool — a card table filtered by type (Code, Status, Type, Name, Remaining life, Location). Competence — a read-only view of the matrix and the missing competence list; editing is on the desktop.

12. Permissions
| Task | Required |
|---|---|
| Viewing: all tabs, the Log, capacity, the mobile views | System administrator or the production module permission. Otherwise: "Work centers require production module permission." |
| Writing: work center, membership, operator resource, competence, routing link and requirement line | System administrator, production planning or the can view machine records permission. |
| Writing: mould, fixture, tool and area resources; mould maintenance (put into maintenance, maintenance done, refurbish) | System administrator, production planning or the can view tooling records permission. |
Every write also needs the write gate to be open on the server and the user not to be read-only; otherwise the top right says "Read-only: you are not allowed to …" and the write buttons are hidden.
